Express Entry is Canada's main immigration system for skilled workers. In 2026, draws are more targeted than ever: French speakers, healthcare workers and other in-demand profiles are invited at much lower scores than general candidates. This guide gives you the full picture: how the system works, the latest draw results and how to position your profile.
What is Express Entry?
Express Entry is not a visa itself: it is the online system Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) uses to manage applications for three federal permanent residence programs. Every eligible candidate receives a Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS) score out of 1,200, and IRCC invites the top-ranked profiles in regular draws.
Federal Skilled Worker (FSW)
For candidates with at least 1 year of skilled work experience, in Canada or abroad. The main route if you have never worked in Canada. Requires 67/100 on the FSW selection grid.
Canadian Experience Class (CEC)
For candidates with at least 1 year of skilled work experience in Canada within the last 3 years. The fast lane for international graduates and temporary workers already in the country.
Federal Skilled Trades (FST)
For qualified tradespeople (welders, electricians, plumbers, cooks and more). Requires 2 years of experience plus a valid job offer or a Canadian certificate of qualification.
How Express Entry works: 6 steps
- 1Take a language test · IELTS or CELPIP for English · TEF or TCF Canada for French. Aim for CLB 9+ in your strongest language.
- 2Get your credentials assessed (ECA) · Foreign diplomas must be evaluated by WES, ICAS, IQAS or CES · allow 8 to 16 weeks.
- 3Create your Express Entry profile · Submit your profile on the IRCC portal and receive your CRS score · profile stays active 12 months.
- 4Receive an Invitation to Apply (ITA) · IRCC runs draws roughly every two weeks, general and category-based. Top-ranked profiles are invited.
- 5Submit your e-APR · 60 days after the ITA to file the complete application: biometrics, medicals, police certificates, proof of funds.
- 6Become a permanent resident · IRCC targets 6-month processing for 80% of complete files · then you land as a PR anywhere outside Quebec.

Category-based selection in 2026: French is the biggest lever
IRCC now reserves most invitations for targeted categories. The gap is dramatic: while CEC candidates need roughly 516-517 points, the French-language category invited 5,000 candidates at CRS 420 on July 9 · nearly 100 points lower. If you can reach CLB 7 in French, you unlock the single most powerful shortcut in the system, plus up to 50 CRS bonus points.
French-language proficiency
Cut-offs around 420 vs 516+ for CEC. Up to 50 bonus CRS points for French CLB 7+. The top strategic play of 2026.
Healthcare and social services
4,000 ITAs at CRS 475 in June. Physicians were invited at an exceptional 223. Nurses, doctors and allied health are in demand.
Senior managers · trades · STEM
Executives with Canadian experience were invited at 392 in July. Skilled trades and STEM occupations get dedicated rounds too.
Provincial Nominee Program (PNP)
A provincial nomination adds 600 points, which makes an ITA near-certain. PNP cut-offs of 708-730 reflect that bonus.

How your CRS score is calculated
The Comprehensive Ranking System scores candidates out of 1,200 points:
| Factor | Maximum |
|---|---|
| Age | 110 pts |
| Level of education | 150 pts |
| Languages (English + French) | 270 pts |
| Canadian work experience | 80 pts |
| Spouse factors (if accompanying) | 40 pts |
| Skill transferability (combinations) | 100 pts |
| Provincial nomination | 600 pts |
| Canadian study experience | 30 pts |
| Sibling in Canada | 15 pts |
| French CLB 7+ bonus | 50 pts |
Quick tips to raise your score
- · Retake your language test: moving from CLB 8 to CLB 9 can add 50+ points via transferability
- · Learn French: CLB 7 unlocks up to 50 bonus points and the 420-level category draws
- · A provincial nomination adds 600 points and effectively guarantees an ITA
- · Note: job offers no longer add CRS points (removed in March 2025) · scores now reflect human capital only
- · Keep your ECA and language results valid: expired documents invalidate your profile
Express Entry vs Quebec: two different doors
Express Entry leads to permanent residence anywhere in Canada except Quebec. Quebec runs its own skilled worker system, the PSTQ (Programme de sélection des travailleurs qualifiés), with its own points grid and French requirements.
Not sure which door fits your profile? We are based in Montreal and support candidates through both systems: PSTQ for a life in Quebec, Express Entry for the rest of Canada.
