Express Entry is Canada's main immigration system for skilled workers. In 2026, draws are more targeted than ever: French speakers, healthcare workers and other in-demand profiles are invited at much lower scores than general candidates. This guide gives you the full picture: how the system works, the latest draw results and how to position your profile.

What is Express Entry?

Express Entry is not a visa itself: it is the online system Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) uses to manage applications for three federal permanent residence programs. Every eligible candidate receives a Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS) score out of 1,200, and IRCC invites the top-ranked profiles in regular draws.

Federal Skilled Worker (FSW)

For candidates with at least 1 year of skilled work experience, in Canada or abroad. The main route if you have never worked in Canada. Requires 67/100 on the FSW selection grid.

Canadian Experience Class (CEC)

For candidates with at least 1 year of skilled work experience in Canada within the last 3 years. The fast lane for international graduates and temporary workers already in the country.

Federal Skilled Trades (FST)

For qualified tradespeople (welders, electricians, plumbers, cooks and more). Requires 2 years of experience plus a valid job offer or a Canadian certificate of qualification.

How Express Entry works: 6 steps

  1. 1Take a language test · IELTS or CELPIP for English · TEF or TCF Canada for French. Aim for CLB 9+ in your strongest language.
  2. 2Get your credentials assessed (ECA) · Foreign diplomas must be evaluated by WES, ICAS, IQAS or CES · allow 8 to 16 weeks.
  3. 3Create your Express Entry profile · Submit your profile on the IRCC portal and receive your CRS score · profile stays active 12 months.
  4. 4Receive an Invitation to Apply (ITA) · IRCC runs draws roughly every two weeks, general and category-based. Top-ranked profiles are invited.
  5. 5Submit your e-APR · 60 days after the ITA to file the complete application: biometrics, medicals, police certificates, proof of funds.
  6. 6Become a permanent resident · IRCC targets 6-month processing for 80% of complete files · then you land as a PR anywhere outside Quebec.

Category-based selection in 2026: French is the biggest lever

IRCC now reserves most invitations for targeted categories. The gap is dramatic: while CEC candidates need roughly 516-517 points, the French-language category invited 5,000 candidates at CRS 420 on July 9 · nearly 100 points lower. If you can reach CLB 7 in French, you unlock the single most powerful shortcut in the system, plus up to 50 CRS bonus points.

French-language proficiency

Cut-offs around 420 vs 516+ for CEC. Up to 50 bonus CRS points for French CLB 7+. The top strategic play of 2026.

Healthcare and social services

4,000 ITAs at CRS 475 in June. Physicians were invited at an exceptional 223. Nurses, doctors and allied health are in demand.

Senior managers · trades · STEM

Executives with Canadian experience were invited at 392 in July. Skilled trades and STEM occupations get dedicated rounds too.

Provincial Nominee Program (PNP)

A provincial nomination adds 600 points, which makes an ITA near-certain. PNP cut-offs of 708-730 reflect that bonus.

How your CRS score is calculated

The Comprehensive Ranking System scores candidates out of 1,200 points:

FactorMaximum
Age110 pts
Level of education150 pts
Languages (English + French)270 pts
Canadian work experience80 pts
Spouse factors (if accompanying)40 pts
Skill transferability (combinations)100 pts
Provincial nomination600 pts
Canadian study experience30 pts
Sibling in Canada15 pts
French CLB 7+ bonus50 pts

Quick tips to raise your score

  • · Retake your language test: moving from CLB 8 to CLB 9 can add 50+ points via transferability
  • · Learn French: CLB 7 unlocks up to 50 bonus points and the 420-level category draws
  • · A provincial nomination adds 600 points and effectively guarantees an ITA
  • · Note: job offers no longer add CRS points (removed in March 2025) · scores now reflect human capital only
  • · Keep your ECA and language results valid: expired documents invalidate your profile

Express Entry vs Quebec: two different doors

Express Entry leads to permanent residence anywhere in Canada except Quebec. Quebec runs its own skilled worker system, the PSTQ (Programme de sélection des travailleurs qualifiés), with its own points grid and French requirements.

Not sure which door fits your profile? We are based in Montreal and support candidates through both systems: PSTQ for a life in Quebec, Express Entry for the rest of Canada.

Express Entry: frequently asked questions

How long does Express Entry take?+
IRCC aims to process 80% of complete applications within 6 months of submission. Counting language tests, the ECA and time in the pool, plan for 6 to 12 months from start to permanent residence.
How much does Express Entry cost?+
Government fees are about $1,525 CAD per adult (processing fee plus right of permanent residence fee), plus around $85 for biometrics. Add language tests (about $300), the ECA (about $250) and medical exams. Settlement funds are shown, not paid.
Do I need a job offer for Express Entry?+
No. Most candidates are invited without a Canadian job offer. Since March 2025, a job offer no longer adds CRS points, so your age, education, languages and work experience carry the score.
Does speaking French help my Express Entry chances?+
Yes, massively. French-language draws have cut-offs roughly 100 points below CEC: on July 9, 2026, IRCC issued 5,000 ITAs at CRS 420 while CEC draws sat at 516-517. French CLB 7+ also adds up to 50 bonus points.
What is the minimum CRS score in 2026?+
There is no fixed minimum. CEC cut-offs hover around 516-517, while category draws go much lower: 420 for French speakers, 475 for healthcare, 392 for senior managers, and 223 for physicians. PNP draws run at 708-730 because of the 600-point nomination bonus.
Can I apply from outside Canada?+
Yes. The Federal Skilled Worker program is designed for candidates abroad: you can create a profile, receive an ITA and land as a permanent resident without ever having lived in Canada.
