1-2 weeksCreate your IRCC account
30 minutesAll IEC applications are online through the IRCC secure portal. You need a GCKey or Sign-In Canada account.
- 1. Go to canada.ca and find the "Temporary resident" section
- 2. Create a GCKey (most common for non-Canadians)
- 3. Complete the IRCC online questionnaire to confirm eligibility
- 4. Select "Working Holiday" as your IEC category
Enter the IEC pool and wait
Weeks to monthsThis is the part most people misunderstand. The IEC is not first-come-first-served.
How the pool works
IRCC runs draws throughout the year. Each draw pulls candidates from the pool and sends Invitations to Apply (ITAs). Submit your profile early to improve your chances before your country's annual quota fills.
- • Pool profiles are valid until the quota closes for the year
- • You can be in only one IEC category pool at a time
- • Submitting early in the year typically improves your chances
Accept your Invitation to Apply
10 days to respondWhen your ITA arrives, you have a fixed deadline:
Missing either deadline means your ITA expires. You re-enter the pool and wait for the next draw.
Submit your full application
1-3 weeksUpload your documents and complete the formal application:
Arrive in Canada with your Letter of Introduction
Your start dateOnce approved, you receive a Letter of Introduction, not the physical permit.
Print this letter and bring it to the Canadian border on your first entry.
A Border Services Officer will review your documents and issue your open work permit on arrival.
Your permit start date is the date of first entry into Canada, not the approval date. Plan your travel accordingly.

The permit arrives. What next?

4 mistakes that delay applications
Passport expiring too soon
Your passport must cover your entire intended stay. If it expires within 24 months, renew it before you apply.
Inadequate health insurance
IRCC requires insurance that covers hospitalization for your full stay. Read the policy carefully. Day-to-day coverage is not enough.
Missing the ITA response window
You have exactly 10 days to accept your Invitation to Apply. Set a calendar reminder the moment your ITA arrives.
Incomplete police certificate
You need a certificate from every country where you lived 6+ months in the past 10 years, not just your home country.
