Create your IRCC account

30 minutes

All IEC applications are online through the IRCC secure portal. You need a GCKey or Sign-In Canada account.

  1. 1. Go to canada.ca and find the "Temporary resident" section
  2. 2. Create a GCKey (most common for non-Canadians)
  3. 3. Complete the IRCC online questionnaire to confirm eligibility
  4. 4. Select "Working Holiday" as your IEC category
4

Enter the IEC pool and wait

Weeks to months

This is the part most people misunderstand. The IEC is not first-come-first-served.

How the pool works

IRCC runs draws throughout the year. Each draw pulls candidates from the pool and sends Invitations to Apply (ITAs). Submit your profile early to improve your chances before your country's annual quota fills.

  • Pool profiles are valid until the quota closes for the year
  • You can be in only one IEC category pool at a time
  • Submitting early in the year typically improves your chances
5

Accept your Invitation to Apply

10 days to respond

When your ITA arrives, you have a fixed deadline:

10 days
Time to accept ITA
From the date of issue. Non-negotiable.
20 days
Time to submit application
After accepting. Upload everything within this window.

Missing either deadline means your ITA expires. You re-enter the pool and wait for the next draw.

6

Submit your full application

1-3 weeks

Upload your documents and complete the formal application:

1Personal information forms (IMM 5710)
2Passport scan (bio page + all stamps)
3Proof of funds (bank statements, 3+ months)
4Travel health insurance certificate
5Police certificate(s)
6Biometrics (if required for your nationality)
7Medical exam results (if requested by IRCC)

Arrive in Canada with your Letter of Introduction

Your start date

Once approved, you receive a Letter of Introduction, not the physical permit.

Print this letter and bring it to the Canadian border on your first entry.

A Border Services Officer will review your documents and issue your open work permit on arrival.

Your permit start date is the date of first entry into Canada, not the approval date. Plan your travel accordingly.

4 mistakes that delay applications

Passport expiring too soon

Your passport must cover your entire intended stay. If it expires within 24 months, renew it before you apply.

Inadequate health insurance

IRCC requires insurance that covers hospitalization for your full stay. Read the policy carefully. Day-to-day coverage is not enough.

Missing the ITA response window

You have exactly 10 days to accept your Invitation to Apply. Set a calendar reminder the moment your ITA arrives.

Incomplete police certificate

You need a certificate from every country where you lived 6+ months in the past 10 years, not just your home country.

Common questions

From submitting your pool profile to receiving your Letter of Introduction, the total process typically takes 2 to 6 months. This depends heavily on your nationality and how quickly your country's quota fills. Some applicants receive their ITA within weeks; others wait several months.
No. The IEC Working Holiday permit is an open work permit. You can work for any employer in Canada without a job offer at the time of application. Many people arrive without a job and find work within their first few weeks.
Instead of processing applications first-come-first-served, IRCC runs regular pool draws and invites candidates who meet the criteria. Submitting your profile early improves your chances of receiving an invitation before your country's annual quota is filled.
It depends on your nationality. Some countries (like the UK and Australia) allow a second IEC Working Holiday. The rules vary, so check the specific conditions for your country on the IRCC website or contact our team.
Your Invitation to Apply expires after 10 days. If you miss it, you re-enter the pool and wait for the next draw. This can delay your plans by several months, so respond as soon as you receive your ITA.
Your partner can apply for their own IEC if they are also eligible. Once you have your open work permit, your accompanying family members may be eligible for other temporary permits. Our team can advise on the best structure for couples.
